Residency dates: July - September 2026* (three full months)
*Please note the dates advertised are tentative and we can discuss which dates suit the selected artists best. We would like the alumnus and faculty artists to be in residence at the same time. It is possible for artists to be in residence up until November 2026.
Applications close 5pm GMT Monday 16 March 2026. The residency jury will meet early April 2026 to consider all applications, shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview via zoom on Thursday 9 April, after which applicants will be told if they have been successful.
Some important points regarding the residency:
- In 2026, the Giverny residency will host two Royal Drawing School artists, one alumni and one faculty member. Both artists will be in residence at the same time. Both with their own small self catering apartment space.
- Giverny provide a large shared studio space, this will be shared with the other RDS artists and the possibility of one other artist at Giverny.
- Giverny is a very busy tourist attraction, and welcomes over 500,000 visitors during its open season (April - November). Due to the high number of visitors artists can only draw in the gardens outside of opening hours. The garden is open to the public 9am - 6pm (during the summer the sun sets at 10pm). Artists have 24 hour access to the studio space.
- The surrounding area can become very busy during peak season, it is important that artists in residence are prepared for how busy the gardens and surrounding area can get during opening times. This can be overwhelming for some, so please consider this in your application and the dates you would prefer to attend.
- Giverny is based in a rural location, WIFI can be patchy, transport links sometimes poor and limited shops and restaurants locally. For the visiting artists we would advise to bring a bike with you, or take a car with you if you have one.
2024's artist in residence Alicja Biala filmed this short film of the shared studio and accommodation for another artist, which you can watch here which gives you an idea of the space: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13eUWZ5OhKMtsWzsPIDe9U_Fw4VOCYCvn?usp=sharing
Applications are reviewed by a jury panel according to the following criteria:
- Clarity of artistic vision as articulated in the artist statement and work samples
- Persuasive evidence that the applicant is committed in purpose and practice
- Clear evidence that the artist works at a professional level in their field
- Clear indications of the significance and critical role that the residency will play in the development of the artist's project
